Here are some common questions about Fluid Running.

Considering Fluid Running?

How deep does the water need to be?

Deep Water

The water needs to be deep enough so that your feet do not touch the pool bottom when you are running in the upright position.  We typically say it should be about 5 inches shorter than you, so if you’re 5’5″, it will need to be 5′.  If you are 6′, it will need to be 5’7″.  If you are within a couple inches, you can purchase a pull buoy to raise you up a little higher.

Shallow Water

Should be above your waist, and below your neck.

What is the belt size?

Our standard belt is adjustable up to a 54″ waist, however, we have extensions available upon request at checkout (just add it to the note).  If a larger size is required, please contact us with details.

What if I don't have anything to connect the tether to?

You can attach the tether to a lane line or to any stationary object like a ladder or even the legs of a diving board if you’d prefer to tether yourself in place., however, the tether is optional for the workout.  We include it with the program because it keeps you from “traveling” in the pool but really the goal is to have as little travel movement as possible without the tether.

Do I need to know how to swim?

No, you don’t have to be a swimmer.  The flotation belt will keep you afloat, however, we do recommend that people be comfortable in the deep water as the flotation belt is not designed as a life saving device.

About the Workout

How does Fluid Running compare to running on land?

In terms of form, Fluid Running and land running form and mechanics are the same. What’s different is the impact and calorie burn. In Fluid Running, there is NO impact. There’s no such thing as low impact running on land. Many of our participants are avid runners, but running on land can cause joint stress and injuries. Fluid running lets people enjoy the benefits of running with none of the harmful impact. Cool, circulating water helps improve flexibility while cushioning the joints and reducing inflammation. Water also creates resistance, which is why deep water running burns about 40% more calories than land running.

Is Fluid Running a good option for weight loss?

Absolutely. Deep water running burns up to 40% more calories per minute than running on land. It also puts less stress on the body, and the classes are fun group experiences. All of these factors make Fluid Running an easier routine to stick with than running on land. Eating a healthy diet and taking two Fluid Running classes a week could help you lose 20 pounds in 8-12 weeks – we’ve seen it happen!
